If you have found a flat sheet of ice under the bottom freezer basket, or a little water creeping out under the crisper and onto the floor, the odds are good you are looking at a frozen defrost drain rather than a broken refrigerator. What the defrost drain is actually for

That melt water has to go somewhere, so it runs down a small trough at the base of the freezer, through a short drain line, past a soft rubber check-valve, and into a shallow pan near the compressor where the heat of the machinery evaporates it away. The whole system is quiet, continuous, and invisible — right up until the drain blocks.
When the drain cannot clear, the next defrost cycle's melt water has nowhere to go. It pools in the trough, refreezes before the following cycle, and each cycle adds another layer until a slab of ice has built across the freezer floor. Eventually the water overflows the trough entirely and finds the path of least resistance, which on a built-in is down the inside of the cabinet and out onto your kitchen floor.
Why hard Lamorinda water makes it worse

A frozen defrost drain has a recognizable signature. First, the ice is on the floor of the freezer, under the lowest basket, in a flat sheet rather than as scattered frost on the walls. Second, any water that reaches the kitchen appears at the front toe-kick a day or two after you first notice the freezer ice, not as a sudden gush. Third, the problem is cyclical: thaw the unit and it behaves for several days to a week, then the ice and the puddle return on the same schedule the defrost cycle runs.
If instead you see heavy frost climbing the back wall of the freezer, or the freezer is drifting warm overall, that points more toward a defrost-heater or evaporator-fan fault than a simple drain clog, and the diagnosis shifts. Owner-safe checks versus a service call
There is a little you can safely do. You can confirm the ice is on the freezer floor rather than the walls, photograph it, and note the timing against any leak onto the kitchen floor.
